Spent the day last Friday up in the Hudson River Valley at Sara's company outing, which took place at an action-packed day camp. Afterwards, we took our Zip car up Bear Mountain, then drove upstate a bit and stayed the night at a 200 year old mansion which had been converted into a B&B known as the Caldwell House. Unfortunately, we had to drive back into the city the next morning to return the car, just in time to catch the beginning of the Hurricane Irene scare. Dark, eerie skies and light rain greeted us back in Brooklyn, with the streets relatively empty. Still, we found a bar down the street that was having a free BBQ during the day in their backyard (!), so we had some beers and listened to some Rebirth Brass Band, which seemed appropriate at the time.... The rest of the night, we just stayed in, made pizzas, watched movies, drank bourbon, several beers (in coozies to protect them from the storm), and passed out. Woke up the next morning to survey the storm damage, which wasn't all that bad in the Greenpoint/Williamsburg area... we were a block in from the mandatory Zone A evacuation area too! Looks like we dodged a bullet. Still, turned out to be a wild, nutty weekend....
